A Background and a Sketch

Oh my goodness peeps, I've been busy, busy, busy. Part of my busy has been spent thinking of what I want to make at my 4 Day crop the end of  February. I've narrowed down the kinds of cards I want to make. Now I'll be busy making kits. Before I've always planned on the spot and I don't get very much accomplished. This time I'm going to measure, cut, and punch my pieces parts ahead of time. I'll let you know how it goes.

This week Operation Write Home has Sketch Challenge 209, and ScrapZee has a background challenge going on.

The ScrapZee challenge is to use a corner of a 12x12 design paper as the background of your card. I normally buy design paper with an overall design so I don't have to worry about the pretty corners. So I went with 6x6 paper pads where there are corner designs.

I've had this paper pad a long time so I don't remember who made it. All I did to the paper was add some Glossy Accents by Ranger on the word Love. Since there were already hearts along the bottom edge I punched out some hearts with the Heart punch by Martha Stewart. It also punches hole to thread ribbon, so that's exactly what I did to make the banner. A couple of silver Pearl Pen dots to anchor the ends, and I called it done. Clean, simple, and easy. Using a corner design suddenly became a lot easier.

The Operation Write Home weekly sketch goes together very quickly. I also used a 6x6 paper pad by Teresa Collins, and used a corner for the background. Here's the sketch:

I love the colors and designs of the paper pad! The long strip on the left side, and the two banners are from the pad. I used a button die from Sizzix and some twine. For the rectangle I used design paper and matted it on card stock. The only thing I didn't do is the three dots and the bottom. I got so wrapped up in this card I didn't even give that element a thought. The center of the rectangle is a very soft gray and white. I left it blank so I could add a sentiment as needed.

I'll leave you with a parting thought: I'll be looking at Designer Series Paper [DSP] with brand new eyes!

Chalkboards and Banners

Howdy peeps! If you're wondering what chalkboards and banners have to do with each other, I'll tell you. Absolutely nothing... unless you are combining two challenges. And  I’m getting a last minute dive for the deadline for both. Nice Marlene, great way to start a new year. L

Last Wednesday the challenge on Operation Write Home's Midweek Throwdown was to make a card using the chalkboard technique. Now, I love how it looks, but have never been brave enough to try it. I Googled "Chalkboard Cards" and found lots of good samples, tutorials, videos, and Pinterest Boards. This technique was lots of fun and now I’m wondering why I was so scared!

Also on last Wednesday was a Banner Challenge on the ScrapZee online group. We were, of course, supposed to use a Banner on a card. So…. by combining both challenges I came up with this card. The background is a pretty “Valentine” red, but the photo has a nasty orange hue.

Good morning peeps! For this month's BootCamp lesson Paula is teaching us how adding variation to your design can add interest.

I chose a CAS design and used flowers in different styles, color, and size for my variety.

I love how this turned out, but only Paula can decide if it fits the BootCamp lesson. My inspiration comes from a recent His & Hers Online Card Class where Jennifer McGuire had a lesson on Masked Borders. I'm gravitating to CAS style cards right now and this technique really struck my fancy. I will definitely make more of these.

Roses For Mom!

Good morning peeps, and Happy Mother's Day to all my family and friends!

I heard from my son a little while ago and we had a nice chat. He lives 6 hrs away so I won't get to see him today... but that's O.K. because he was just up last week. This afternoon my daughter is taking me out to my favorite restaurant to eat. Yay!

My card is made by using supplies from the May 2013 SSS Card Kit of the Month. You just can't beat this deal, and, it's mailed to your door every month! This is what came in my kit:

I stamped the roses and leaves in Frost White by Color Box, and heat embossed. I used my Ranger Distress Markers as water colors to get the softer color. [I used: Spun Sugar, Worn Lipstick, Peeled Paint, Broken China, and a water brush] I CASEd one of the sample photos that came in the kit because I just love the look. Mojo No Go

Happy Sunday peeps! I've been taking the Online Card Class called His & Hers this past week. Just so ya know... I'm reluctantly posting my cards for 3 lessons. My mojo, like Elvis, has left the building! One great thing about paying for these online classes is that I always learn a lot, the teachers are fantastic, great sample cards and videos, and unlimited access to the student galleries.

Of course all this great stuff doesn't help when you're mojo won't cooperate. Ha! So without further ado I'll get to my cards I made.

Day 1 - Thinking of You - Kristina Werner, teacher - using circle elements
His: I'm really loving this one. The mustache print and stripes are from a double sided paper by Fancy Pants Designs called Mustache Fever. Perfect for guys.

Hers: I really like this one too. I just had trouble with my lighting so it looks kind of washed out here. The doily stamp is from a SU set called Delicate Doilies.

Day 2 - Happy Birthday - Christina Kowalczyk teacher - using vellum
Hers: This one isn't too bad. My strips of vellum are 1/2" wide and I colored them with Copics. [Y15, YG03, BG01, R22] I attached the strips, at angles, to the back of the white piece. Believe it or not, the sentiment is actually straight. I think the angles of the vellum make it look wonky.

His: This has to be my favorite of the two, which is good considering I have trouble with masculine cards. I used Copics to color my vellum [ BG01, BG05, YG03]. The squares are 1 1/2", the HAPPY is sticker letters.

Day 3 - Sympathy - Kristina Werner teacher 
His: I love this one too. I love Washi tape so I used two designs on this card. The music design is by Theresa Collins, don't have a clue about the woodgrain. I found it at a LSS. I stamped the sentiment with Brushed Corduroy distress ink and used a distress marker [same color] for the dash line. These are by Ranger.

Hers:  Yeah.... no! The Hers version was an epic fail. 

Well there you go peeps. My mojo may not be where it's supposed to be but I had fun trying to get it back. Now it's time for me to get a cuppa coffee, prop my feet up, and put the heatin pad on my tired, aching back.

This past week has been crazy, but I'm thankful the Good Lord has allowed me to keep my sanity. Those of you that follow my blog know my mom, who is 90, is in bad shape in the Nursing Home. Mom's been having chest pains so they're looking to see if she's developed heart problems or if it's something else. There is no definite conclusion yet, but it's been a whirlwind of visits, phone consultations. and keeping the family updated.

I did manage to get some craft time in this weekend. Here's my take on Clean and Simple, and this week's OWH Sketch Challenge.

I've had the Hero Arts stamp set, All The Time, since it came out and have wanted a clock embossing folder to go along with it. I finally found this one by Darice at my local craft store. The clock and sentiment are stamped using Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink by Ranger. I matted the embossed piece and sentiment on kraft cardstock.

I've never had an embossing folder as temperamental as this one. Now, I use really sturdy cardstock when I emboss... but this folder embossed so deeply that it actually tore the cardstock at the circles. OMG... are you kidding me?? NEVER had this happen before!! On the bright side, I now have embossed clock die cuts to use on something else.

I used my Cuttlebug and had to do away with the normal "B sandwich". I solved the problem by placing several pieces of cardstock on  the A spacer, my EF on top of that, then a B plate on top of that. It was crazy but I was determined a piece of cardstock and a hand cranked machine were NOT going to get the best of me. [giggle]

OWH Blog Skip - Cards With Critters

Good morning everyone! I hope wherever you are you're staying safe and warm... and ready for some fun. Today Operation Write Home is having a blog skip {like a blog hop, only shorter} and our theme  is Cards with Critters!

I have two cards to share. First up is this cute little Hedge Hog. I left the sentiment off so that our heroes can send it for any occasion. The flower is a satiny material and squishes flat so there's no lumps or bumps to get caught in a postal machine.

The background paper is from Authentique 6x6 paper pad called Lovely, and the edges are sponged with Ranger's Tattered Rose Distress Ink. I spritzed a small paper doily with Heidi Swapp's Color Shine Irridescent Spritz in Sweet Cherry. The stamp, which I've had for awhile, is Buzz in the Air from Penny Black and is colored with Copics. The ribbon is from May Arts.

Next I have a card using an Elephant.

My background paper is from My Mind's Eye 6x6 paper pad called Blush. The elephant is from Hero Art's Stamp & Cut set called, of course, Elephant. [A die and 3 clear stamps] I colored the elephant with Copics and paper pieced her ear. The ribbons are from May Arts and the sentiment is from a set I've had for a long time. Sorry, don't remember where it's from.

A Tag and a Booklet

Hello peeps! How are you this fine day? I haven't been feeling that great the past week and a half... got some kind of bug. Last Saturday I went to an all day crop that I had signed up for. Well... it was either that or lose my $20. I went with high hopes of making 30 cards but that was an epic fail! I think this bug has gobbled up my mojo. On the bright side I made 3 new friends, one of whom also makes cards for Operation Write Home. There was a lot of socializing and eating. A light breakfast, catered lunch, and catered dinner was included in my $20 fee. I know... right... you just can't beat that!

We all did 2 Make and Takes, and that's what I'm showing you today. Diane Dezso, owner of Paper Crazy, always comes up with such adorable vintage, shabby chic, projects. My projects came out looking blah, and the inks are muddy, but I don't worry too much when it's a Make 'n Take. My main goal is to get the basics down so I can recreate it at home.

This tag was fun to make, and all sparkly, but the photo doesn't do it justice.
The 1st step: cover a tag with 3-4 torn pieces of DSP.
The 2nd step: sponge Ranger's Distress Ink [Tattered Rose and Tea Dye] all over the tag but mine looks muddy!
The 3rd step: randomly stamp 3-4 images on the tag using black ink.
The 4th step: randomly drop several medium globs of Ranger's Distress Stickles, in Rock Candy, on the tag. Then, using my finger, spread the Stickles all over the tag. Kind of like finger painting.
The final step: add our embellishments. The double bow, the ticket, and the Rosette, or what's supposed to be a Rosette.

This booklet is made with one sheet of 12x12 double sided DSP that is cut in half. One piece is scored at 4 1/4" and creased for the outside pages. The other piece is scored at 5 1/2" and creased for the inside pages. Sponge the DSP with the ink used above and bind with jute. Embellishments are the tag, bow, and definition.

Birthday Card and Tag

Good afternoon friends! I hope everyone had a happy and safe New Year's. I'm just an 'ole stay at home person for New Year's Eve, but I do enjoy myself.

I'm getting a jump start on birthday cards for family and friends. This card is inspired from the Fun Fold  Challenge over at ScrapZee.

It was enjoyable working with something other than Christmas colors. Another plus is the card and tag went together very quickly.

OWH Sketch Challenge #150

Hello peeps, and Happy December! Boy, little did I know that when I posted on November 21st that it would be so long. I was a week longer at my son's for Thanksgiving than I planned, car trouble, and then computer issues when I got home. Loooonnngggg stories that you don't want to hear, and I don't want to repeat. Let's leave it at... I'm home, my car's fixed, and my computer is working. :)

Here's my card for this week's sketch challenge on Operation Write Home's blog, Stars & Stamps. I used white puff paint to give the whipped cream topping some dimension. I used a sheet of double sided paper by Little Yellow Bicycle for the background paper and the large scalloped oval.

I need to add a warning right here. Those of us making cards for our heroes to write home DO NOT use glitter of any kind. It can flake off and make our heroes visible through night vision goggles. The strip of blue across the center of my card is glitter paper... so it will go with my cards only for my family and friends. I did several "flake" tests [rubbing the paper on clothing, scraping with finger nail, etc.] to see if the glitter would come off, and so far it doesn't.

However... I do not use this paper for OWH cards for our heroes. I won't take the chance with their safety, and neither should you. DO NOT use glitter or glitter paper when making cards for OWH!!

Turquoise and Silver... Oh My!!!

Good morning friends, hope all is well with you! I'm so excited about today's post, and card, that I can hardly stand it. eeeeeekkk!! Normally I'd post this tomorrow, but I'll be traveling to my son's for Thanksgiving so I'm posting it a day early.

Several weeks ago I was asked by Jan Hunnicutt to make a card for today's color Midweek Throwdown [MWT] for Operation Write Home's blog Stars & Stamps. For the colors I  chose Turquoise and Silver. I just love the look of these colors together and use them a lot for Christmas... so my sample card is a Christmas card. This is a very Clean and Simple [CAS] design and can be mass produced very easily.

The metallic silver card stock came with the scalloped edges and measures 4 1/4" X 5 1/2"; perfect size for a card front. I made sure I wiped my X-Static embossing pouch all over the card base before I stamped the tree and sentiment in Peacock Feathers Distress Ink.

Normally this ink dries very quickly, but on the somewhat shiny card stock it gave me enough time to sprinkle on clear embossing powder and heat set it. This is why the X-Static pouch is needed. It's filled with a talc like powder and really helps prevent the embossing powder from sticking where you don't want it. In a pinch I've used baby powder but I prefer the embossing pouch. I added a simple ribbon bow and in less than 10 minutes I had a finished card.

Now you know why I'm so excited about this post, and why I want to make sure it gets posted. You see, I don't have the best of luck scheduling posts in blogger :( I'm soooo honored to be asked to make a card and pick the colors for this week's MWT. I love making cards and I'm proud of my work. At times I can be rather anal about my craft because I want it to be the best work I can do. But... for Jan, from OWH, to recognize the work of lil 'ole me and ask me to make a card for their blog..... well that's just to the moon and back awesome!!

Fall Is In The AIr

Hi my friends!

Earlier today I promised you another card. My cupcakes are done, and frosted, so on to my card. I made this Autumn card using this week's Bonus sketch at Operation Write Home. All of the sketch cards can be found here.

I don't like what my camera did with the designer paper. It's way too bright and in your face, when in reality the colors are very muted. I'm not sure who makes the paper, or where I got it. I found three 5 1/2 x 4 1/4" pieces in my stash. I trimmed it down and matted it on dark brown cardstock. The sentiment is I added 4 burlap strips, a little Tea Dye Distress Ink by Ranger around the edges, a few leaves punched out using Creative Memories leaf punch, and it's time to call it done!

Let me tell ya about those burlap strips! Now I can really drool when I see what other card makers do with burlap. I figured... how hard can that be? Yeah right! Really?? The dang gum piece I bought has a mind of it's own and wanted to go every which way but straight.

Busy week ahead: A Sketch Challenge & Candy!

Good morning friends!

This week will be a super busy one for me. It's week 1 of The Birthdays! [da da da dunnn] October is Birthday Central for so many of us in the family. This week [yesterday] two granddaughters celebrated their big day; Kaitlyn turned 11, and Kiara turned 8. Today my lovely mom is 90 years young. I'm having a small party for her this Saturday so it's busy, busy, busy!

This week is my turn to host the Member Challenge over at CardSwaps. It started Monday [yesterday] and runs through Sunday, Oct 14th, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Note: you'll want to read my entire post... there's Candy involved! Here's the sketch I came up with, and 2 samples:

My first sample is Christmas themed. The papers are from the "Peaceful" collection by Authentique Paper. The sentiment is a sticker from the "Details" sticker sheet of the same collection. The gray is shimmer cardstock and I used VersaMark ink by Tsuneko to stamp small snowflakes for an all over design.

My second sample is also Christmas themed. The red and green designer papers are by The Paper Studio. I matted both papers on green dotted swiss cardstock by Bazzill Basics Paper.

A Tropical Thank You

Hello my friends!

My little card today combines the CardSwaps and OWH Midweek Throwdown challenges together. On Tuesday CardSwaps posted their CardMaker Corner Challenge to use a sketch from CardMaker Magazine. I'm using sketch #20 from the November 2010 issue as I already had this set out to use for Christmas Cards.

On Wednesday OWH Stars & Stamps posted their Midweek Throwdown challenge to create a 'Thinking of You' card. So I thought... why not combine the two. I'm slowly learning to combine different challenges into one card.

I had some Graphic45 paper left over from a summer project. The background paper has fish on it but you can't tell it here, it's one side of paper called "Oceania". The tropical bird is from one side of paper called "Botanica". This particular piece of paper has several birds and other tropical images, 9 altogether, and I love that. They come in handy when Mr. Artha Ritis won't let my hands do fine, detail coloring. The image already had the distressing around the edges. I distressed my cream card stock so it would somewhat match. I used dark blue card stock for matting and some dots of Liquid Pearls for bling.

Authentique Paper, Part 2.

One last post for today. Boy... it sure has been a busy one for me. I made another project for Authentique Paper's September challenge. This Haunted House was both fun and time consuming to make. The template for the house came from Winnie Thacker, owner of The Scrapbook General Store in Flatwoods, Kentucky. Winnie is the sweetest lady EVER! Whenever I visit my son, who lives 30 minutes away, her shop is my LSS away from home. Without further ado, here's my Haunted House project.

It's on the small side, measuring 2 1/2" x 4 1/2", but cool things come in small packages.

Untie the ribbon, open it up, and Voila... oodles of pockets for tags and mini photos. How cute is that?? The individual bats were cute apart from the Bat Ribbon I used on the previous card.

Here's a close-up of one of the tags. I had so much fun decorating all the tags and pockets. I kept everything pretty simple, and flat, 'cause it goes to a cute little girl.

Revisiting a forgotten technique.

Gooood morning friends, and 'Happy Hump Day'! I think my Mojo is workin in overdrive this week. I'm not complaining because it's been kinda slow lately. A new Member Challenge was posted Monday over at CardSwaps. Elaine has a water color technique for us, and I had so much fun with this forgotten technique that I couldn't stop creating. It makes for a quick, easy, and stunning CAS card.

The first method [cards on the right] is by coloring directly on a stamp using either water based markers or watercolor crayons, mist the stamp with water and stamp on paper. I don't have the crayons and my water based markers have long since gone to the craft pile in the sky, so I improvised. Ahhhh, good 'ole Improv! I used Ranger Distress Ink in three shades on my stamp, and misted it with water.

The second method [cards on the left] is to use reinkers and drop a couple drops of color directly on a stamp block, then use a brush dipped in water to spread the color on the block and stamp the color on paper. Then, stamp an image over the color after it dries. Time for Improv again. :)  Using Distress Ink pad I pounced the pad on a stamping block and misted it with water, then used a water pen to swirl the ink.

I know you're supposed to use watercolor paper but I couldn't find mine, so I used white cardstock. When the color dried I found a very nice, almost velvety texture, where I had stamped. [Happy surprise.]

Christmas in Spetember

I made this Christmas card for the Member Challenge over at CardSwaps. This week it's a color challenge with red being the dominant color.

The cardstock is darker red than the photo shows and looks much nicer. (Sure wish I could take good photos) I used a brand new embossing folder and stamp. The folder is from a new to me company named Crafts-Too and it's called Snowflake Banner. After embossing I used my craft knife to cut out the center so the white card base would show. The new stamp is Christmas Peace by Stampendous and was inked with Festive Berries from the Winter Bundle by Ranger. (I don't know if this bundle is still available) Some touches of Stickles, a white bow, and call it done!
